Assessing students through exams

There seems to be an increasing trend towards assessing students through exams rather than continual assessment.

What are advantages and disadvantages of exam as a form of assessment?

In recent times it has been observed that there has been rise in number of exams and a dip in the short continuous checks in many institutes. I believe this problem has to be addressed on the basis of age group as well as the bunch of subjects been enrolled for studying.

Some people feel that only exams can be considered as merit for courses done after eighteen, while some think students with good basics should be marked by examinations. Although this is not true for all the professions, for some it would be of great help. To illustrate, careers like Nursing or Doctors require rigorous disciplined work with practical hands-on experience, but the bachelors degrees in subjects like Geography, Mathematics can be rated just by exams. Furthermore, this would be the best option for working professionals.

Many abide with facts like with only exam to be judged, the in-disciplinary actions would surge, factors like low attendance in colleges become quite common. Certainly work ethics are not built, in addition sincerity is at risk. If students do not behave responsibly it can cause numerous problems in their future. To build a character is also one of the pivotal fundamentals of universities, only a marked piece of paper wouldn't serve the purpose.

To conclude it is safer to have the continuous assessments for overall growth of an individual. However, concession must be provided to the worker class, as they should be allowed to be continue studies. This would help them grow further in their career without a doubt, as learning never stops.
